Ephesians 6 - Honor Your Parents

My notes taken from Pastor Walker's sermon at CVP in December.

Pastor Steve Walker, Central Valley Presbyterian Church, Dec. 29,2013
"Honoring Our Parents" Ephesians 6:1-3

Ephesians 6:1-3
Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.  Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

  • God gave parents the authority over their children, it's their God given task, not just a job.
  •   Honoring your parents is a way to honor Christ.
  • All authority is placed and given by God.
  • All people bear the same classification in heaven, we're neither male nor female, old or young, beautiful or handsome.
  • Children would be foolish not to learn from the mistakes of their parents.
  • You do not want to keep yourself bound to your old self.
  • Your parents authority over you, represents Christ's authority over His people.
  • It is impossible to bring glory to Christ through honoring your parents without being filled with the Holy Spirit.
  • We all seem to equate authority with glory and position.
  • Now days, all most kids want is to graduate high school, get a great college education and get an amazing high paying job that takes up their life, when instead they need to concentrate on being godly examples, and following His will for them, living it out.

Getting Ready to Move

Well, it seems like not long ago we were counting down to our move date, and we were at 22 months.  And now we're at 4 months and 8 days.

I am so thankful, now, that we had those 22 months, even if at the time it seemed like forever, it was one of God's ways of giving you something you need, even if you don't think you do.  It leaves us at at a good "ending point" so to speak.

I've all of a sudden realized that my family is moving very soon!  Time definitely flies.  And now we're into preparing, cleaning, organizing, cleaning some more and even a little packing.

I've spent several weeks now, going through rooms, cleaning every square inch, going through every item, and putting a bunch of stuff in a Saver's or Garage Sale pile.  And then getting the house ready to show to potential buyers, hiding anything that may pass as "clutter" and even packing a few boxes with decorations and winter clothes, things I don't need right now.

I was put in charge of a garage sale last week, so I took all the items that were overflowing our stair landing, organized them and set them all up for a big yard sale.  The next day, bright and early, it actually wasn't even bright, it was just early Gabrielle and I sat out front for 6 hours and sold away our old stuff.  Some things I had a hard time letting go, I almost wanted to tell people, "I played with that when I was little, I loved it," or "A girl I used to be friends with gave me that, it meant a lot," or "Please take care of this!" But I figured that might be a little weird.

Now that we've gotten rid of a lot of stuff, our house looks great!  And it's also all clean.  Which is a great plus.

We have a lock box on the door, and a For Sale sign in the yard, making this even more real.  It's kind of sad, but also exciting!

Anyway, that is what we've been up to, I haven't even touched school work in several weeks, not that I really care.  But I've been doing things that definitely need to be done.

We are starting to have our "Lasts" here in AZ.  The other day was our last sight reading with new music in orchestra, and that was sad, we've been doing that in our orchestra for 4 years.  Another last, I reviewed my parental visitation schedule that's been done quarterly for the last 17 years for the last time a few days ago.  That was a big one.  But there will be plenty more to come, I know.
